Is your paper machine's top forming wries suffering from frequent wear? start by examing these four reasons

1.wears on both sides of the forming wires:

Severe wear occurs along the edges on both sides, within a range of 15–30 cm from the margin; this sometimes appears as a continuous loop or in a discontinuous pattern.

Possible reason: Guide rolls are non-parallel or poorly leveled, causing the wires to mistrack and rub against the machine frame or flanges; edge guide plates are improperly adjusted or worn, causing direct scraping of the mesh edge; vacuum suction box edge seals have worn grooves into the mesh; mesh-edge trimming doctor blades are not fully closed at the ends; pulp accumulates at the ends, forming hard clumps that abrade the mesh edge. Recommended troubleshooting steps: First, check the parallelism of the guide rolls and the condition of the edge guide plates; then, inspect the ends of the blades for pulp accumulation.

2. wear pattern in the central area:

wear in the middle section of the forming fabrics surface is signficantly more sever than on the sides, covering a large, continuous area.

Possible reason: Excessive pressure in the center of the high-pressure spray pipe (due to uneven nozzle clogging or incorrect nozzle type); a groove worn into the center of the vacuum suction box cover (increasing friction); uneven cross-machine direction (CD) stock distribution from the headbox (resulting in an overly thick stock layer in the center and a heavy dewatering load); excessive crown on the center-high roll (causing concentrated contact pressure in the center); or a notch in the center of the blade (leading to stock accumulation and the formation of hard lumps). Recommended checks: Inspect the high-pressure water pressure profile and check the cross-machine flatness of the vacuum cover using a straightedge or specialized tool.

3.Characteristics of longitudinal strip-like wear: multiple parallel, slender scratches or wear bands spaced at regular intervals, going in the direction of the fabric's travel.

Possible reason: Wear on the vacuum suction box cover (most common)-longitudinal grooves caused by hard objects acting like a  blade against the forming fabrics; longitudinl scratches or burrs on the surfaces of guide rollers contacting the wires underside; nicks in the blade edge-leading to pulp accumulation or direct scraping at the corresponding location; or adhesive deposits or hardened pulp clumps adhering to the cover. Troubleshooting tip: After shutting down the machine, run your hand over the underside of the forming wires; grooves will be clearly palpable. Focus the inspection on the vacuum box cover and the surfaces of all guide rollers.

4.Characteristics of localized pitting wear: isolated small circular or elliptical dots or irregular small holes, distributed discontinuously.

Possible reason: Hard clumps of pulp on the guide roll (due to the doctor blade not sealing tightly) → causing abrasion at the same spot on the wire with every rotation; a hard protrusion beneath the wire (e.g., a screw head, welding slag, or a detached ceramic piece); a damaged or misaligned high-pressure water nozzle → the water jet piercing the wire strands; or hard particles in the pulp (e.g., sand or adhesive clumps) becoming trapped between the wire and the roll surface. Troubleshooting tip: Mark the wear point on the forming wires, run the machine slowly for one full rotation, and observe whether the mark aligns with the same angular position on the same roll.
